Bad luck in Spa – now aiming to bounce back in Monza this weekend!
Spa was really disappointing. We should have had much better results. Practice went really well and I headed the time sheets for much of the session. The track was wet to damp and improving all the time. We were happy with our pace and very confident for qualifying.
Again, in qualifying the track was damp and times were getting quicker, so we elected to wait to the end of the session to go out and try to do the two laps needed (to set grid places for race 1 and race 2) on just one set of tyres, leaving us with a new set for one of the races. It almost worked, but we left it slightly too late and when I went out it was into slow traffic and I was held up on my flying laps. Other drivers suffered the same fate, and we fared better than some, with qualifying positions of 6th and 8th, but that wasn’t where we should have been.
Early pace in the first race wasn’t great, then I was hit from the side which damaged the steering and didn’t exactly improve the handling! I clung on but was disappointed to finish 9th.
Starting 8th for Sunday’s race, it was almost a carbon copy of the bad luck the day before. I was hit on the side early on but this time the damage to the steering was much worse and I was considering retiring the car. It’s not ideal trying to wrestle a car up Eau Rouge at 155 mph with a broken steering rack! Maximum concentration!
I decided to keep going to get as many points as possible, finished 9th (helped by a couple of safety car periods) and managed to get 3rd place Rookie. I’m currently 4th in the Rookie Standings with three races to go.
On to Monza this weekend, hoping to get a result! We tested there early in August and we were quick, so we are aiming to qualify well and race at the front.
